Paul Wyrich, a Dominionist, is the person who led Evangelicals from a position of being generally apolitical to overwhelmingly supporting the GOP. Wyrich thought that they could more effectively push their brand of Christianity into law by supporting the GOP than supporting Carter.

Though Carter is an Evangelical himself, he firmly believes in keeping religion out of secular government.

Sam Bee talked once about how it was busing not Roe that really got them going. The racist roots of Evangelicals in politics can’t be ignored here. William Jennings Bryan, yeah I’m predating Reagan even here was a KKK defender. I’m glad the party went in the Al Smith/FDR direction in regards to secularism.
