Oh FFS. My white, Confederacy-loving 7th grade Texas history teacher used to wax eloquent over Juneteenth and the wonderful barbecue/picnic celebrations the local black folks would have in Mackenzie Park. This would have ca. 1945.
In fact, these celebrations continue to this day, still in Mackenzie Park, and they really are pretty good.
