I still don’t understand the “safe spaces” thing. One of the things I really enjoyed about college and law school was engaging with people on issues that had different opinions than I did on issues. Granted, I was a poli-sci major and often the one “dissenting” view in policy classes (which I tended to come at from more of a libertarian bent than a conservative one), so maybe I’m just weird like that.

Unless it’s just that people have become bigger assholes than we were back then?

It’s really less about hiding from different ideas and more about being protected from the applications of some of those ideas, (such as anti-feminists trying to verbally or physically assault avowed feminists), and asking schools to actually recognize it’s not just “debate” when those kinds of things happen.
