I agree that 9/11 re-ignited the military obsession of our nation, and opened the door for a new era of bigotry.

But I would probably point out, in a larger discussion, that it was the Iranian hostage crisis and the election of Reagan that was the inflection point, from the progress that started with Wilson and went through Carter, as far as building a nation that was more willing to work for peace globally, and make the US itself more democratic and a society where equality was more valued.
