This is similar to my siblings getting mad at for recognizing a bunch of our cousins for the racist nitwits they are. “Just ignore them, they’re not changing, it’s not worth it.”

I know it sounds self-serving, but then I’m the one who gets yelled at for challenging the racist comments because everyone just wants to have a good time at the Memorial Day get together, despite cousin Robert dropping n-bombs left and right.

I had a couple of relatives like that. I chose to ignore them because they were over 80. Younger ones, not so much.
