It’s a very delicate dance. Romney tried it but he obviously wasn’t even close to being conniving enough to pull it off. It’s all about sounding crazy enough to win the primary, but doing so in a deniable “that wasn’t really what I was saying” manner so that you can believably move to the middle in the general.
