Didn’t McCarthy and his enablers go after Marshall anyway? ISTR that a consistent theme of the Red-baiters in that era was that Marshall had “sold out” (Europe? China? Somebody?) to the Communists because Yalta or whatever. It was, I think, considered whackaloon BS even at the time: but fortunately, Eisenhower was in charge (Ike was a devoted protege of Marshall’s, and HATED the red-baiter faction of the GOP since they had pushed him to make a speech critical of the then-SoS in the ‘52 campaign)…

China had been sold out to the Communists since Truman (with Marshall as SoS) hadn’t militarily intervened into what would have probably been Vietnam x20 (or worse) in order to save a very corrupt Nationalist Chinese government that pretty much was incapable of running the country, was at least partially fascist in it’s core, and in all likelihood was not salvageable anyways.
