It’s not so much not understanding as that history is part of what brought me to Islam. I’ve read about the Salafis have done in history (The Sack of Karbala being the most infamous example).

These historical events make them look barbaric. So I take the view that, since history shows they can’t be dealt with rationally, one must be aggressive against them, since they understand little else. This view hasn’t been helped by my dealing with this year’s MSA president.

I just think trying to deal with them rationally is like trying to negotiate with a brick wall.

I think your understanding of history and what it means for future action is not very deep.
