It is very likely that no Confederate butternut uniform was ever made in anything close to that size. Thanks to states rights, Lee’s army was starving by 1864. Each sovereign state jealously guarded its own production for its own troops.
At the same time, Sherman’s men were eating like planter aristocrats on confiscated stores in Georgia. They even found a cache of blue uniforms Georgia had purchased for its militia before the war. These, and a similarly liberated batch of smuggled Enfield rifles, were used to outfit the many unionists and freed PoWs Sherman added to his army during the march.
