I had a 1986 GTI. It felt really quick, especially after the Toyota Tercel it replaced. The standard Golf had 89hp then, and the GTI had 110, which felt like a HUGE difference! I never found it wanting for power, even driving with Mrs. FBW over the Rockies, when other cars were dragging behind it kept right on chugging at 70mph with nary a complaint.

I should clarify. I had the diesel Rabbit with a whopping 52 hp. It got great fuel mileage - turning in 50 mpg tanks in the midsummer was awesome - but absolutely no guts at all.
