I know a few people who went to DC and, personally, I think that most of the folks there (and at most tea parties) are decent, hardworking and really fed up people. And racist nut jobs like this try to use the anti-big government tide to push their tripe and try recruiting the feeble minded (of which there are plenty on all sides, apparently). I have no doubt that there are people there who can’t stand a black president and want to stoke the flames, but I also think that there is no interest, on the medias part, to portray the entire movement as anything other than a bunch of racist fringe kooks. The reports I got from the people I know who went were very positive. I also think there is a lot of disgust with Republicans as well, people are sick of professional politicians who only care about the purse strings instead of representing their constituents. Case-in-point, the stimulus plan was passed even after constituent calls were running something like 10-1 against passing it.
