Absolutely that is true. You could argue it more strongly even and say that trying to refine your base nature is one of the main goals of religion.

However, there is a difference between preference in deep seated drive.

The sex drive is not some trivial thing that is easily reprogrammed or wrestled with.

It turns out that at least in the religious Jewish community - I know about this because I am in it, there are gay people. Many of them even get married to a straight spouse. This creates a situation frequently that is miserable for both of them.

You simply can not overwrite something that deep and it is cruel and unjust to pretend that these people could do it, if they were just a little stronger.

Ther are cases of Gay orthodox Jewish men seeking electroshock therapy to cure themselves of their “illness.” Guess what, they are poorer, more miserable, feel more outcast and humiliated because of it, and they are still gay.
