I can’t explain it but I think Wheat explains it pretty well. I really don’t like the more old school ones but the so called revisionist ones are great.

One of the things I loved about Unforgiven is the moral complexities at play. Little Bill, ostensibly the villain of the piece, is entirely correct when he scorns Munny as a “killer of women and children” and towards the end of the film, we see the ostensible hero - that old trope of the legendary gunfighter - for what he truly is…..an irritable, murderous psychopath fueled by rotgut whisky.

It was a basically a deconstructionist Western and as far as I’m concerned, perhaps Clint Eastwood’s finest hour as a director. The screenplay was a tour de force.
