Nebraska’s surge in COVID-19 cases spurs debate over how best to fight pandemic (Omaha World-Herald)
TL;DR: Despite the massive surge in coronavirus cases in Nebraska, Governor Run Nebraska Like A Business still insists there will be no “heavy hand of government” in dealing with the virus. He insists “we must do better,” but not that. The only order he will issue is bars must prohibit standing, only allowing sitting.
TestNebraska, the libertarian techbro Utah group which has no experience in epidemiology or medicine but is still working on it’s no-bid contract to provide testing to the state is taking five days to turn around tests.
The cities of Kearney and Grand Island requested from the governor permission to impose mask mandates in their cities, which was denied by the governor, because Nebraska is a dictatorship where one billionaire makes decisions for 1.9 million people. (Omaha and Lincoln still have mask mandates.)
The governor has also prohibited turning away voters who do not wear masks to polling stations in counties which use those. Polling stations may also not offer paper masks.
Government offices may not require masks, with the threat of withholding federal CARES funding (this includes schools). Schools which remain closed (such as mine) are being threatened with pulling state aid unless they return to in-person classes.
