lemme repeat again: I grew up in a midwestern industrial town during the Golden Age of the White Working Man, back when a fellow just had to finish High School, get on at a mill or factory, rack up some seniority, and he could afford a (modest) house and a (mid-sized) car, and still keep his wife at home to raise the kids, whom he could put through (state) college on his wages.

And those guys were every bit as racist as you see today…

Yeah, I keep seeing references to how the white labor movement suddenly became a WHOLE LOT LESS about “brotherhood of workers” when some of the workers joining, say, the UAW, were black.

Something tickles the memory about FDR having to send in troops to Detroit during WWII to get the white boys back to work because they were freaking out about having to work next to black guys on the airplane & tank assembly lines.
