re: #183 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

Nah, Ares got too clever. Frank wrote it up a few threads ago.

These are the kind of idiots that give gun-likers a bad name, anyway. Pushing the envelope on unregistered, unserialized guns, I mean, come on, where the hell is the good in that? What legitimate reason is there for it?

I read Frank’s posts. From what I can see of the regulations, Ares is probably in compliance. I say probably because it’ll have to go to a federal court to say for sure since BATFE works on the “guilty till proven innocent” model.

The reason for the 80% business is simple enough - though I’m sure it’s illegitimate to you - is the belief that the government will come to seize firearms eventually and thus they need to have firearms without serials or other paper trails that can be kept safe.

There is also a simple joy in building such a thing. I don’t have a lathe or milling machine to do it from scratch but an aluminum 80% receiver, the proper jigs & a few hours time on my father’s drill press would make for an entertaining weekend (or two) project. I’d prefer a 1911 80% over a AR one but then I’m rather more of a Fudd than the real gun nuts like.

In the end it’s not that much different from working up ammunition for a WWII rifle like my Type 99 Arisaka or other such hobbies.
