I wrote a short paper on that subject back in college (US and Canada resisting/refusing visas for refugee Jews in the 30s.) You have to recall that the isolationist vibe was very strong in the US in the 30s, and with it ran a lot of anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric.

I always wonder if other countries pick up on our hypocrisy about being a melting pot, until a new wave of immigrants shows up.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t chiseled the “Give us your huddled masses” part off of the Statue of Liberty pedestal yet.

Or at least tried insert the word ‘white’ before ‘huddled masses.’
