As I recall, we paid Russia for Alaska, whereas Russia just walked into Crimea and took it without even asking.
Crimea was historically part of Russia, it was “administratively” awarded tot he Ukraine under Khruschev in the 1950’s. Back then it didn’t matter, it was all part of the larger USSR.
But the breakup of the USSR left tens of millions of ethnic Russians stranded beyond the borders of the Russian Republic, not unlike the Sudentenland Germans.
