The Trump admin’s current position: Trump was just joking when he told Comey to stop the investigation.

Except that:

A) Donald Trump had obviously fired James Comey as head of the FBI.
B) Afterwards, Donald Trump, of his own volition, went on an interview on US TV, and said that the main reason he fired Comey was that he wouldn’t stop said investigation.
