Strange Journalistic Fact of the Day: Sometime in the late ’60s, it was noticed that the NYT Sunday Fashion section had, from time immemorial, been airbrushing out the belly buttons of swimsuit and lingerie models. No one knew why, and they stopped.

My very Irish Pre-Vatican 2 Catholic girlfriend tells me that when her parents found her playing with her belly button, they taped it over with a band-aid, telling her that they had to stop it before it led to undefined “other things”…
