My Mom’s parents were a bricklayer and a waitress. Not successful but not hemorrhaging either. The problem is we have a bunch of politicians who have convinced themselves that investing in our Middle Class is socialism even though investing in the Middle Class in the first place is how we have had our most successful economic booms i.e. The GI Bill, Interstate Highway, etc. But a self righteous asshole reads Hayek or Friedman and thinks that’s the way.

The Interstate Highway System had to be sold to conservatives as investment in national security rather than the country’s infrastructure though.
