This has been my working theory for quite a while. The Cheneys were not acting out of integrity or moral principle when they turned so publicly on Trump: They have no such principles. Instead they were running for cover after Darth’s contacts had alerted them to some looming catastrophe that was
about to overtake Trumpism. When the nuclear story broke, I thought, yeah, this might be it.
