Rundgren also produced the first New York Dolls album. This is early 70’s punk.

I have to go to bed, but this brings back a memory. My brother had just married a German woman and moved to Hamburg in the late 1980s. He asked me to visit—implored, really—and I had a bit of money saved in the 1991, so I went to visit. His wife had him doing all kinds of home improvement jobs and the fucker virtually had no time for me, so I just went wandering around Hamburg. One night I went in a bar in my stock American jeans and polo shirt and khaki jacket. Two guys in leather jackets were deep in conversation down the bar, but after 15 minutes or so I recognized English: “too much too soon” ha ha and some exaggerated German. I smiled and said “New York Dolls!” They burst into smiles and, as they ordered “korn” for me, explained that they were thinking of kicking my ass (they spoke nearly perfect English, so who knows how “working class” they really were) until I spoke the magic words.

The funny thing is, I only knew a few NY Dolls songs. But I had recently seen David Johansen’s “Live it Up” tour show, and that kicked ass.
