Religious people use the second fallacy all the time, arguing “evolution is just a theory.” The fallacy assumes there is only one definition for a word (and no second or slang definitions).

When I was in school (about the same time as you, AM), they taught us how the Scientific Method works: one proposes a hypothesis, and then subjects it to objective testing. If the results are positive, the hypothesis becomes a theory.

(But I have a theory that a lot of people have never been taught the scientific method…)
