I don’t know if Huckabee has changed drastically in the last 10 years, or if he’s just given up hiding an ugly core that was always there. He used to seem like basically a good guy.

I distinctly remember in 2008, when he said of the Clintons “hey, they put in the effort to work through their problems and save their marriage. They’re still together. And they’ve raised a fine daughter. The fact that we disagree on economic policy doesn’t take away from that.”

And I distinctly remember in 2008, when he said of Jeremiah Wright, “I grew up in Arkansas during Jim Crow, I remember it all very clearly. What they endured was real, it was cruel, we should all be grateful that Black Americans for the most part aren’t as angry and vengeful as I would be if I’d had to put up with that for all those years.”

I even voted for the asshole in the 2008 primaries. (I voted Obama in the general. Other than Michael Bloomberg, the last Republican I supported in a general election was HW — a vote I still stand by, BTW. Dukakis had some admirable liberal ideas on domestic policy, but there’s no way he’d have been as awesome at foreign policy as it turned out was needed during that unexpectedly volatile few years.)
