It’s the money you have to pay before the insurance company that you pay premiums to will actually start to pay for any of the medical coverage you get. Ranges in size from very low (but those premiums will cost you more!) to reasonably high (on the order of $5-6k? I haven’t shopped around for insurance in a while because, haha, we just get whatever the employer decides).

As high as $15k. I looked on the marketplace when my wife and kids were lacking insurance temporarily when she got a new job.
