Up is down. Right is wrong. Freedom is slavery. And so on.

Orwell if he were alive today would be saying, “I told you so.”

I’ve just finished episode 5 of The Crown. Spoiler alert: Elizabeth had her coronation on the telly.

Joking aside, it never occurred to me that the fuddy-duddies on the coronation committee would have objected to televising the investiture. It also occurred to me that I have never seen a British monarch’s coronation, aside from historical footage, because Elizabeth has been Queen four years longer than I’ve been alive.

Also, the portrayal of David Windsor (formerly King Edward VII) and Wallis Simpson Windsor is pretty spot on. I remember seeing those two make appearances on TV talk shows when I was a kid, and even then I recognized what a pair of snobbish, overly entitled bores they were. But the series does suggest how he may have been inwardly conflicted about giving up the Crown to remain with “the love of his life.” It also shows how his decision to abdicate was deeply resented by his own family, who obviously regarded it as a betrayal of them and the institution of the monarchy.
