My understanding is limited, but I believe the church’s teachings say that confirmation takes place when the kid is old enough to speak for him or her self, instead of parents doing it for them at Baptism. Therefore, those catholic boys are old enough to take responsibility for ruining their own lives, if that is what happened. They are also old enough to take responsibility for any sins they committed (I hope some of their behavior qualifies as ‘sinful’), and perform an act of contrition.

Too much to expect.
