re: #168 Gus
Short of a unilateral cease-fire, Israel needs to stop shelling and/or bombing within densely populated civilian areas. Another option being to use ground troops and take the fight directly to Hamas. Otherwise, this is unsustainable.
I’m seeing reports today that Israeli soldiers were killed in a booby trapped UN clinic. Ground troops carry a lot of risk to Israeli soldiers. Bombing valid military targets integrated with civilian infrastructure cause lots of civilian casualties. Urban warfare has always been messy but you’re right that this current situation isn’t sustainable. However I’m not seeing a lot of realistic alternatives that allow the Israelis to address their security needs. I suppose a long series of assassinations might be a possibility but would certainly cause a lot of concerns about international law. I’m not seeing any good alternatives.
