But long term? There are a lot of law-enforcement types who just rocked back on their heels today, and then nodded.

Trump and the nutbar Deplorables are just a small fraction. They cannot organize all this by themselves. And a long, slow, painful investigation into Trump is pretty much inevitable now. Law enforcement knows how to do this..

Has any significant fraction of Republicans shied away from anything their Lord and Master wants to do? This is just one of those eggs that must be broken to produce the omelet of their proper society, in which the white man is supreme and all else exists at his sufferance.
