re: #175 HappyWarrior

So guns ok, but if you say leave them loaded around kids, see ya later guns? My position with guns is this: I’m fine with a handgun, shotgun, or rifle for home protection, hunting, recreational shooting, but I lose it when I see someone need a fucking arsenal that rivals a platoon’s. I also don’t believe in open carry and I believe businesses have a right to ban guns from their premises and I believe they in fact should be banned from all places of business for the most part. I’m more sympathetic to closed carry as long as you prove you don’t have a history of violence towards yourself or others. I want us to look at what’s worked in other countries where personal gun ownership remains high but gun violence remains low.

without going too far down this rabbit hole today, i think most of what you say fits in a broad interpretation. there are so many moving parts to this issue

- everyone is law abiding till they’re not
- continuing to plug the last new hole in the dike made by the last shooter is not a long term solution
- good gun behavior ‘should’ not be legislated - ie safes, insurance, recurrent training
- screw up in any way and be prepared to lose your freedom, finances, future and 2a rights
- i think it gets ‘difficult’ when we start to pass judgement on ‘why’. why someone else needs or wants one or a hundred guns. if held and stored responsibly i dont care why.
- i personally think open carry is nuts
- wrt businesses, i think private property rules
- there will never be registrations or databases
- whether you are an individual or dealer, you should be responsible for who you sell, lend or give your gun to. if you dont use reasonable care in evaluating that person, you should be responsible for what they do (within a period of time)

i have said over and over that if there were strict laws of consequence for bad behavior a great dent could be made in the carnage and in weeding out the most irresponsible
