So today’s conservative excuse for Kavanaugh’s behaviour seems to be “who amongst us men haven’t been in bar fights?” Wow, I gotta say, that’s some (brain dead) defence (and also a lie).

I was involved in exactly one bar fight in my entire life.

I wasn’t one of the fighters. I was on Shore Patrol.

My ship was in port in Naples, and a Soviet naval vessel also pulled in for liberty and replenishment. Shore Patrol as usual was tasked with making sure sailors didn’t get out of hand and if they did, cancel their liberty and send them back to the ship. I assume the Soviet Union’s version of Shore Patrol was tasked with the same thing.

Several of us from both ships were stationed in a popular Naples bar on the waterfront, where both American and Soviet sailors were drinking. Don’t know who started it, but someone flung an insult at the other’s country and the bar fight was on.

Both American and Soviet Shore Patrols were dragging anyone they could get their hands on out of the bar (grab ‘em now, we’ll sort them out later) before the Carabinieri got there and arrested the whole lot and threw them in an Italian jail.

Later, both the USA and the USSR settled up payments to the bar owner.

Shit it’s not even the bar fight, it’s what he got in a fight over.
