That’s because they are supportive of the party and tend to get behind candidates who support the party as well. So if they get to the convention and feel that Bernie was pushed upon them in the name of “party unity,” they’re going to start questioning their support for the party. Again, they’ll bite their lips and vote for him if he wins within the boundaries of the rules. But if the party looks like they’re carving out an exception just to appease his supporters, a lot of those stalwarts will un-ass and do so in a hurry.

The party won’t carve out an exception for him, but it would be a huge mistake if Sanders is denied the nomination if he leads all the other candidates by a big margin, as seems likely. Here is an article explaining why a Sanders nomination should not be feared. vox.com
