Hell, to this day, I don’t know why anyone would actually want the job. This particular case, with Biden likely serving only one term, is an outlier. In most cases, you’re tying your political fortunes to someone else - and while you will probably get the nomination, your odds of winning seem to be pretty low. Nixon didn’t win when Ike was termed out. Neither did Humphrey. Rockerfeller didn’t even get the nomination. Mondale got crushed in ‘84. Quale never had a chance in ‘96 or 2000 (and we won’t even talk about Gore in 2000). GHW Bush is the embodiment of an outlier in this regard.
