Lithuania was the last nation in Europe to convert to Christianity, and only succumbed following a brutal series of crusades by the Teutonic Knights that lasted from the 12th century to the 15th. Even after the Grand Duke converted, the knights continued their campaign to cull all the remaining pagans (and Orthodox Christians while they were at it) in the region. It’s still considered the longest continuous war in the history of Europe.

The Teutonic Crusades ravaged all the Baltic states and Finland too, and committed total genocide against the Old Prussians, adding insult to extermination when the genocidal knights went and adopted the name of the extinct Prussians as their own nationality. It’s not for nothing that Friedrich von Schrötter called 18th-century Prussia an “army with a country” rather than a “country with an army”.

I watch a lot of “Great Courses” lecture series, and Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius’ _History of Eastern Europe_ was a big eye-opener. I recommend it!
