I find Republicans like that much more frustrating to figure out. With a Cruz, I know I’m getting a dishonest partisan hack but with someone like that who can be reasonable but goes partisan hack with the push of a button is frustrating.

It’s old party politics. My guess is that McConnell does the traditional leadership thing of threatening committee assignments and primary campaign funding or blocking bills/amendments. One would hope that if this is happening to a not insignificant portion of the caucus, they’d challenge the leadership, but for whatever reason right now, they can’t (probably because the caucus has moved quite a bit to the right).
