That country did so because it thought that the threat of war with Britain and France together would be enough to either force the Reich to abandon their conquest of Poland or at least force them to the negotiating table. And had Lord Halifax’s efforts to negotiate a backdoor peace agreement with Hitler succeeded, Chamberlain would have happily accepted it…if only to piss in Churchill’s tea.
