What the fuck is it about tech journalism that brings out the paranoid and conspiracy?

My guess is it’s a combination of the tech journalist white young single middle-class demographic who don’t usually have anything more pressing to worry about, and the data overload that can generate any coincidence you can think of. If you have a bit of brains and imagination and a lack of impulse control you can turn any few bits of data into a full-blown fantasy in a couple of hours.
