LITTLE ROCK, Ark.(KTHV) - Counting out change to a customer seems to be a lost art these days, but if one lawmaker has his way, every student in Arkansas would be required to preserve this dying skill.

Most cash registers in use today automatically calculate how much change is due. Much different than a decade ago.

“Do we not work with these youngsters enough to learn how to make correct change?”

Representative Kim Hendren says the idea for a bill that would require this simple math skill to be taught in school came after a recent conversation.

“An operator of a sale barn in northwest Arkansas told me, my wife and I went to Sonic the other night bought two drinks for just over three dollars and when the attendant came out I handed a 20 dollar bill to the attendant. The attendant looked so puzzled, hesitated back and then gave him back $21 in change.”
