I suspect the time difference has to do with routes and the mid-level winds. The 787 like the 777 is two engined, which, unless the regulations have changed, the FAA requires the operator to stay within a one-engine operable distance from the nearest airport. That was one of the limitations of the 777 versus the 747. I don’t know if the regs have changed or not.
