TBH, the entire credit reporting system is outmoded, and I would also suggest deliberately discriminatory against POC and the “lower classes.” For example, a person may have moved several times to chase employment opportunities, or to escape an abusive situation. Payments may have fallen behind because of protracted illness or a sudden layoff. The credit rating is obtained with some kind of arcane set of measurements, and only recently has it become possible to see your score at any time without damaging it.

Centralizing that kind of personal information in one place (or three, FTM) was a disaster waiting to happen.

Most of here are old enough to remember the time before the wide consumer availability of one’s credit report and scores, before the federal government’s annualcreditreport.com was available to get your credit reports from all three bureaus once a year for free.

Back in those days, having your credit report pulled could (and would, if done too often) negatively affect your credit score. Want to see your FICO? Unless you somehow got the chance to see the report someone pulled when you were applying for credit (car loan, etc.), it was extremely difficult for a consumer to get directly and, even if you did, it was like reading Greek, because it was meant for banks, not for laymen.
