I owned an older, early 60’s bug when I was a teen in high school. The heater boxes rotted out, you froze to death without a gas heater, died in a head on crash, and the stock engine left something to be desired. But it was cheap to run, great in the snow, and was fun to drive. And you would never ever be able to pass a Caddy or muscle car. They would not allow it. Except in the snow as you waved to them as you flew on by.

My very first car was a ‘59 Bug, split rear window.

The previous owner had modified it with flared wheel wells and the tires from an Oldsmobile station wagon, and it had a 10” racing steering wheel.

When I went to take my driver’s test in it, the tight-asses at PA DMV gave me the Big Nope. I had to come back in my sister’s Datsun to take the test for my license.

That Bug had all the same problems you described. I learned how to work with fiberglass by rebuilding the heater ducts. Good times…
