I have a distant relative who was lynched near what is now Tahoe during Gold Rush days, for beating another man to death. Probably guilty, too. Then his son, who’s my great-great-grand-uncle, I think— shot one of the guys who lynched him— and the guy who he shot was also an asshole who had screwed his partners out of logging rights to an area around there and they packed the jury and got him an acquittal.

It’s so weird to think of it being so Wild West even as recently as that.

There seem to be people who think it is how the Founding Fathers thought society should operate.
