Very good stuff. Despite what some say, this sort of article is neither ‘left’ nor ‘right’, it is simply realistic.

Part of it, I think, is the general dislike of tragedy among American movie audiences, this going double for parents. Americans want badly to believe that the “good guys” will triumph, and making movie where even a supporting character does his/her absolute best and is still defeated is pretty unpopular.

South Park did a spoof of these “Underdog Wins!” movies, the “Stanley’s Cup” episode showed the kids’ hockey team getting the shit pounded out of them.
