Why does the myth persist that America is a “center-right” country? If that was so, Republicans would behave very differently. Somehow the myth is perpetuated by our “liberal media”.

Because the polls always ask some version of the same silly question: “How would you describe your views on most political matters? Generally do you think of yourself as Liberal, Moderate, or conservative?”

The majority always chooses to call themselves “moderate,” second place always goes to “conservative,” “liberal” always comes in a very distant third. Therefore America is “centrist leaning right” according to the pollsters.

It is meaningless of course, it tells you more about how people choose to see themselves than it does about their actual political identity.
