Once again state Senator Ernie Chambers (I-Omaha) is trying to get the death penalty ended in the state.

He successfully shepherded a bill through the Unicameral under the last governor, who vetoed it, then the Unicameral overturned the veto, ending the death penalty.

Our current hedge-fund billionaire governor paid out of his own pocket to fund a referendum in the last election, including advertising, to overturn the law. The referendum narrowly passed and the death penalty was reinstated.

Ernie Chambers seeks a review of the lethal injection protocol, arguing (along with the ACLU) that the drugs used were illegally obtained under Federal and state law by the state. Sen. Chambers also argues the protocol itself is unconstitutional.

He has long sought abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska, and his recent attempt that was successful seemed to be the end of the issue, until Pete Ricketts came along with his referendum.
