re: #1 The Optimist

These Muslims living in the United States know bigotry is wrong. It would be nice if they included bigotry from all sources. Bigotry by Muslims in foreign countries should not be given a free pass. Bigotry is wrong everywhere.

The conference being held in Detroit is in response to a group of professional haters that has come to stir up trouble in Dearborn. The Muslims from Dearborn are handling the situation by responding in a calm, rational, organized fashion, just like any other law abiding Americans would. Why is that not good enough? Is there some extra hoop American Muslims need to jump through?

The Muslims in Dearborn are dealing with a local issue, so there’s probably a couple of hundred people attending at most, with maybe a handful doing the organizing. Why are they suddenly expected to address bigotry on a global scale? You make it sound as if by focusing solely on the local problem that they’re somehow condoning bigotry elsewhere (“free pass”).

What, precisely, are they supposed to do about bigotry overseas from half a world away? Where are they supposed to get the resources to not only deal with the local issue at hand, but also stage a worldwide anti-bigotry campaign all in the space of a one-day conference?

Sorry, but that makes no sense whatsoever.
