When I first read this I was a little alarmed. But it just occurred to me this is not going to help Republicans at all. What states are going to do this? The ones that vote Republican. So, let these states do it and they will dilute their votes further. For example, if Texas does this, suddenly Texas will be giving some votes to Democrats, while California will just send all its votes to Dems. Then there really would be NO WAY Republicans could win the White house.

At that point there might be a movement to amend the Constitution, and then it can be maneuvered to make it a Popular vote instead. I think this would be great and would get candidates to campaign outside the swing states finally. Having National dialogues instead of only local ones centered around “swing states” might actually be beneficial to the country.
