Muslims Claim Christian Group Defamed Them

I’ve never heard of either group, but it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the courts. I wonder if…ah, here we go, the SPLC says they started out as an anti-gay hate group. Looks like they were behind the attempt to smear Hillary Clinton as a lesbian back when she was running for the Senate:

A Dozen Major Groups Help Drive the Religious Right’s Anti-Gay Crusade

Martin Mawyer, longtime editor of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority Report, founded the Christian Action Network (CAN) in 1990, a year after Falwell folded the original Moral Majority.

In his “dirty and dangerous” battle against “militant homosexual groups,” Mawyer has not held back. In 1997, after Ellen Degeneres came out as a lesbian on her TV sitcom, Mawyer accused her of “DUMPING HER FILTHY LESBIAN LIFESTYLE RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF YOUR LIVING ROOM!! … If we allow the tidal wave of gay and lesbian smut to continue to pour into our homes, it will utterly consume us in no time at all!”

In 1999, he asked the Federal Communications Commission to put an “HC [homosexual conduct] warning label” on TV programs with gay characters. The following year, CAN caused a national stir when TV stations refused to air its inflammatory ad attacking Hillary Clinton, who was then running for U.S. Senate.

Over ominous drumbeats, the narrator intoned: “It is rumored that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian. It is rumored that Hillary Clinton supported homosexual marriage. It is rumored that Hillary Clinton will leave her husband upon taking office. … Sometimes, rumors are true. Shouldn’t you know the truth? For more information on traditional family values, please contact the Christian Action Network.” […]

Apparently that didn’t satisfy their lust for hate, so in 2009 they decided to branch out into Islamophobia as well:

One More Enemy

It is one of the least plausible conspiracy theories to ever take hold in the political mainstream: Muslim operatives, placed in sensitive positions throughout U.S. society, are engineering a complex plot to take over the United States, topple the Constitution, and force the country into a gigantic caliphate that will be ruled under brutal Shariah law that punishes religious transgressions with death.

Expanding the Franchise
The Christian Action Network (CAN) is a group also focused on bashing gay men and lesbians….

By 2009, however, CAN was showing interest in the issue of radical Islam, producing a “documentary” called “Homegrown Jihad: The Terrorist Camps Around the U.S.” that claimed there were three dozen such camps on American soil. And that interest has only expanded as Americans grew more receptive. CAN recently announced a “Counter-Jihad Summit” for this August, saying, “Our public schools are sneaking into their curricula pro-Islamic teachings that actually promote Sharia law. An entire generation of our children is being brainwashed!” (The similarity between this claim and anti-gay groups’ claims about gays is hard to miss.)
