Hunter S. Thompson used to say that striving for total objectivity in journalism was bullshit and that you had to get subjective to really dig into the truth of a story. That doesn’t mean he had much sympathy for people posting total lies and calling it journalism, though.
The notion that journalism could and should be objective dates post-WWII. Before that the only ethic was that a paper’s biases were expected to be overt, often reflected in the paper’s name. Read WWII news articles for a fine collection of “BS, but our BS”.
